INTERVIEW: TW Walsh

Hi TW, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been pretty good, thanks. How about you?

Can you tell us more about the story behind your track ¨Young Rebels¨?

It’s just a simple song I wrote kind of quickly. Lyrically, it’s a suggestion to young people that they should enjoy life while they have free time, health and energy.

Did any event in particular inspire the song?

No particular event, but a lifetime of trying to make a living in the modern world.

The single comes off your new album Fruitless Research – why taking so long?

What do you mean exactly? Why four years between albums? Well, I have two jobs and three children. I’ve also had some health problems. So, I’ve been busy. Gimme a break! 🙂

What´s the story behind the title?

I guess it’s supposed to refer to working towards being at peace with the apparent futility of being and doing.

How was the recording and writing process?

I would make recordings in my home studio and send the tracks over to Yuuki Matthews. In some cases, he made drastic changes to the music, and in other cases he simply did minimal overdubs. Then he mixed the songs. It was easy and fun.

What was it like to work with Yuuki Matthews and how did that relationship develop?

It was amazing to work with Yuuki! I’ve known him for about 15 years. He was probably a teenager when we met. We’ve been involved in various projects together (Pedro the Lion, Crystal Skulls, etc) but he’s been developing his production and mixing skills in the last few years, so we got together on this project. It was awesome.

What were some of the fruitless researches that get to influence the album?

Most of my fruitless research has been done in the fields of: spirituality/religion, philosophy, psychology and science. I’ve lived a long time so far and I’ve done a lot of different things.

Do you take a different approach when you are writing or producing for someone else than when you are doing it for your own project?

I don’t do much production for other people. I just do my thing and it comes out sounding like me. I have a thing I naturally do.

In what way did your illness get to influence this new material?

Mostly it delayed progress! Some of the lyrics are probably related to reflecting on my own mortality. Lots of songs have been written about that, I suppose.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m playing a record release show in Boston on 2/12 (https://www.facebook.com/events/491200284392209/), and I’m trying to book some other shows beyond that. I have a really good six piece band right now.

What else is happening next in TW Walsh´s world?

Primarily, I’m gonna keep working, mastering records, raising my kids and meditating. I also sleep sometimes. Once in a while, I sit down and write a song.
