INTERVIEW: The Sky Catching Fire

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
We’ve been busy preparing for our EP release and our EP release show. Thanks to our friends in Orange County Music League for helping us get to this point.

Can you tell us more about the story behind your track ¨Monsters¨?
Monsters is about the shock of meeting someone out of the blue, who you feel a strong connection with, and then finding they are tormented by monsters both external and internal.

Did any event in particular inspire the song?
A chance meeting between classes at the college. She offered me her headphones and put on Looking For a Kiss by The New York Dolls.

How was the recording and writing process?
I probably wrote the song in 5 minutes, it was one of those that hits you complete. The recording experience was awesome. Hear No Evil Studio in Orange, CA put in an isolation booth for vocals, which allowed us to record the whole EP live. We did 3 takes of each song and took the best ones.

What´s it like to have Leon Bridges as a big fan?
That’s flattering. The feeling is mutual.

How has Laguna Beach influenced your music?
Laguna Beach gave me a lot of time to hone my craft. It kept me alive when I found myself laid off of work. I used to sing outside the ice cream shop at Main Beach for tips, hoping to make enough to eat and survive for one more day while I looked for work. The song Dog touches on being so hungry at one point, I had to retrieve half-eaten food out of trash can.

How´s your new EP coming along?
It’s done and about to go to the duplicator. We have a music video for each song, a continuing story we shot in 5 hours a couple weeks ago. They are being edited and we can’t wait to show them to our friends.

Any tentative release date or release date in mind?
The Blue EP is set for release February 5. We are playing a cd release show on February 6 at The Karman Bar in Laguna Niguel, California.

Any plans to hit the road?
All of our booking is handled by Orange County Music League. They asked us this weekend when we want to hit the road, and Steve and I looked at each other and said, “when it gets warmer!” Most likely we will be doing a West Coast tour in May.

What else is happening next in The Sky Catching Fire´s world?
We’re working on new songs and looking forward to playing out of the area.
