International superstars Major Lazer—the collaborative project of Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire—will play to tens of thousands of fans at Tribuna José Martí in front of the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba on March 6, becoming one of the first major American artists to play the country since diplomatic ties were restored between the U.S. and Cuba.
The free show will be open to the public, and is presented by the Musicabana Foundation in association with the people and government of Cuba. As part of the cultural exchange, Major Lazer will meet with Cuban music students and young, up-and-coming local DJs that will share the stage with the group.
“For as long as I can remember, Cuba has played an influential role on my love of music—Cuba has such a powerful cultural impact all over the world and for me, especially growing up in Florida, it became one of the biggest cultural centers for music to evolve from,” says Major Lazer creator Diplo.
“I was lucky enough to visit Cuba a few years back with my friends Calle 13 and during my four days there my mind was blown by the people, depth of culture and their way of life. Going back to perform in 2016 and to be a part of the culture once again is a huge blessing and I couldn’t be more honored to bring the Major Lazer project there.”
The show comes on the heels of a massive year for Major Lazer and the group’s creator, Diplo, who is nominated for Producer of the Year, Best Dance/Electronic Album for Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack Ü with Skrillex, and Best Dance Recording for “Where Are Ü Now” with Skrillex and Justin Bieber at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
Major Lazer’s international smash hit “Lean On” became the most successful song of all time at pop radio and Spotify’s most streamed song of all time with more than 616 million plays to date. Watch the video, Major Lazer’s highest watched with more than 1 billion views, here. Released in June of this year, Peace Is The Missionreached #1 on the Electronic/Dance Album chart and debuted on the Billboard Top 200 chart at #12, marking the group’s highest chart position to date.
Major Lazer is the dancehall-inspired project of Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire fronted by fictional Jamaican ex-commando, Major Lazer. Peace Is The Mission follows the group’s previous two LPs, Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do and Free The Universe, both released to widespread critical acclaim. Founded in 2008 by Diplo and U.K. producer Switch, the group has toured worldwide and collaborated with Pharrell Williams, Bruno Mars and Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend along with dancehall legends like Busy Signal, Vybz Kartel and Elephant Man.
The Havana show will serve as a prelude to Musicabana, the first international music festival produced by American and Cuban partners in more than 30 years. Taking place in Havana, May 5—8, the free festival will usher in a new era of cultural diplomacy between the two nations, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience with an extraordinary multi-genre bill boasting over 25 artists, bands and global DJs.
