A personal passion project for the photographer, #BestBeardsInDallas gave Baxter a chance to visit with men from all walks of life and photograph them in their most comfortable environment, often meeting them for the first time when he arrived on set. Personalities showcased in Baxter’s book this year include an impressive array of local musicians, including soul/R&B singer-songwriter Kirk Thurmond, Pappy McCall of folk band Parallel Play and tattoo artist at J. Hall & Co., Gentleman Tattooers, Bad Mountain front man Jesse Anderson, Jordan Cain of rock duo Rise & Shine, indie rocker Jonas Martin, two-time Emmy Award-winning Dallas music producer Josh Goode and Joel Fruth, a friend to many in the music scene who serves as venue manager at The Prophet Bar. The photographer has also chosen to highlight fashion designer Venny Etienne of LeVenity, a rising star in the scene, visual artist Ali Golzad who’s known for his recycled cardboard designs, Allen Faulkner of FadeFast tattoo removal in Deep Ellum, visual artist and co-founder of local art nonprofit ArtLoveMagic David Rodriguez, Hair by Charlie‘s Charlie Price and many more.

“Men are dedicated to their trades; this commonly means focus on health takes a back seat. I’m speaking from personal experience! Our busy calendars take precedence over annual check-ups, etc. and that’s what I love about Movember. I spent the better part of my senior year watching my stepfather suffer from a brain tumor until he eventually passed. Getting regular check-ups may have caused a more positive outcome,” said Baxter of why he connects to the Movember cause. “Life is short, and we need to make time to take care of ourselves.”

A talented sports, event and music photographer, Baxter did a stint as an official press photographer for the X Games Austin in 2015 and was hand-selected by heavy metal legends Metallica to shoot their national anthem performance on the field. Baxter fell in love with the local music scene after “officially” shooting his first DFW concert, folk band Loyal Sally‘s album release at The Curtain Club for their 2014 release titled, “Ellis.” With music photography as his primary passion and the godfather of live music photography, Jim Marshall, as his biggest creative influence, Baxter explores new subjects in #BestBeardsInDallas and expands his horizons by photographing men from all walks of life.

“Men from all walks of life are now rocking unique variations of facial hair,” said Baxter. “Can I go as far as to say that beards represent courage and strength? Well, I am going to! These guys chase their passions and push through all obstacles.”
