Hi Guy, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi! Merry Christmas, thanks for having me! I’m well thanks.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Oceans”?
‘Oceans’ is the lead single from my new EP of the same title. It’s the most indie/folk inspired of my songs to date and one which musically I like to think takes the listener on a bit of a journey.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
‘Oceans’ is a personal song but one that I think many people can relate to. It’s about the opposing emotions that one feels when dealing with the loss of a loved one, while it’s very difficult and sad there is also an immense feeling of warmth, love and gratefulness for everything these people have brought to our lives
How was the film experience?
While it was very muddy and cold filming down by the sea, it was a lot of fun. The director, Christine Tynkevych is very talented and her team were great to work with.
Why naming the album after this track in particular?
One of the early drafts of the lyrics had a line that mentioned ‘oceans’ and I just started using that as a working title for the song. However, even though that line didn’t make the final cut, the title had really grown on me, so I kept it.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing and recording in my flat had its pros and cons. While I could really get into the zone on the writing side of things, taking on the majority of the recording was quite daunting at times and when encountering any technical challenges I wished I was in a studio with an engineer or producer where I could solely focus on giving the best performance and leave the technical bit to them. Not being in a soundproof space, I just embraced the noises made by the traffic outside and the flights on the approach to London as I felt these little imperfections and croakiness around the edges is just part of the EP’s story. Overall, it was very satisfying to have done it in this way.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
From a mixture of personal experiences and things that I have seen/ heard others close to me experience.
I can hear some Counting Crows and Jason Mraz in your music – did any of them influence the music on this record?
They both may very well have done inadvertently! Especially Counting Crows as I used to listen to them a lot when I was younger.
Having toured great part of the world – what have you learned from these experiences?
It’s been amazing to see how different audiences in different territories respond to different songs. The main thing I’ve learned is how I need to get out there and do it all over again!
Any plans to hit the road?
Looking to arrange a new tour early next year, a combination of house concerts and a UK university tour.
What else is happening next in Guy Valarino’s world?
Writing new material and working on recording some new demos.
