Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thanks! We’ve been good, thank you! Preparing, negotiating, creating, loving and now finally sharing.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Perfect Ten”?
Perfect Ten is a special release for us, it was done in the hardest of times. The melody to the chorus got its life in a dream, we got together in the am. We got our hearts broken around the same time, had to let go of some steam because shit was burning inside.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Living with wannabe actresses. We got totally played, for a long time. Don’t mind acting but these ladies should’ve kept their work to themselves. We’re musicians, not actors…and whatever type of movie we we’re involuntarily co-starring in – worst fucking movie ever…haha.
How was the recording and writing process?
We usually write songs quite fast, “Perfect Ten” was written and recorded in a matter of hours. We usually start blank. Since we’ve been working together for over a decade we know what to do as soon as the first chord is played. Guess you could say we’re in perfect harmony with each other. It’s always been easy. We’re both very emotional people and we’re never shy of sharing our feelings with each other, this always ends in music.
What was it like to work with Phil Tan and how did that relationship develop?
Our publisher, Stellar Songs (Tim Blacksmith & Danny D) introduced us to Phil. Everything progressed from there. His resume speaks for itself, that man’s got some magic stuff up his ears. Phil didn’t mix “Perfect Ten” though, it’s mixed by us. But just wait…
How much did he get to influence the album?
Think we’re known to be kind of anal about our music and visions. Having said that, nothing leaves our hands before a song is complete, produced and a reference mix is done. Phil listens to what we’re trying to bring forward and brings his magic to it. Icing on an already tasty ass cake.
You have had the opportunity of being signed to a big label – why did you guys decide to drop that option and going with an indie one?
Fortunately yes, it’s been a great learning experience. We were signed to that label for about two years, dribbling back and forth with some of the best minds in the business. It’s really helped us moving forward. But, here’s that anal thing again… We can’t have too many people speaking their mind about OUR music. We had to go back to being our own bosses and to being able to create without voices in your head leading you to places, that might be right if you wanna be a big commercial success…and fact is, that’s never been our goal. If it happens, awesome. If it doesn’t, we’ll still be NEWTIMERS and that’s all we want to be, from start to finish.
The single comes off your new EP – how’s that coming along?
It’s been finished for a while actually. We’ve got material for albums, plural. Got so much cooking even the bestest of chefs can’t hang. This EP’s “just” an introduction to what we’re about, hopefully a good and a long lasting one. It’s a three track release with some of the best stuff we’ve written.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The little birdy says early 2016. But as we all know, the music business is never to be trusted when it comes to setting dates, haha. It’ll be out there soon though. So far, no title and it might stay that way. We might let the artwork speak for itself.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! As soon as you’re ready.
What else is happening next in NEWTIMERS’ world?
Right now we’re focusing on getting our stuff out there and to present it to you as personal as possible. But, there’s always collaborations, remixes and features lined up… We’ll be working with some very interesting artists. Exciting times ahead, for sure!
