INTERVIEW: Electronic Folk Band The Royal Foundry

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? HEY!! Thanks so much for having us!

We have been doing awesome! Crazy, busy but awesome!

Can you tell us more about the story behind your track ¨Running Away¨?

Of course! Running Away became one of those songs that materialized due to our crazy busy schedule. We felt like we had been running around like chickens with our heads cut off, for weeks and then in the eery quiet moment in the studio one night, we just wrote this song. Our relief to just focus on our music instead of the business side of the band was much needed, and so we just naturally churned this song out as a result of chaotic time in our lives.

Did any event in particular inspire the song?

Not just one particular event, but many in a string of events that presented themselves to us one after the other. We are a fairly young band, so to be given crazy fun, out-of-our-comfort-box opportunities, we felt extremely excited but overwhelmed which made us feel like we were blindfolded being lead to the unknown. So we channeled those feelings to write a song about running away, not necessarily from our problems but towards them. Taking the ‘ol bull by its horns mentality.

How was the recording and writing process?

We are lucky because we work well together. We are married and like many people know, being in a relationship can deter one another due to the fragile vulnerability being in a relationship requires. But that honesty and openness is a catalyst in helping each other reach our goals in making songs/writing lyrics that we both love. We feed off each other and fill the roles when we see fit. We both contribute to composition and lyrics, but Jared is more about the composition and I (Beth) am more of the lyricist. We own and operate a recording studio (Salt Shaker Studios) and so to get our music written and recorded and to have the time and space to fool around (well, you know what we mean!!) makes the process easy and inspiring.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how´s that coming along?

We are fortunate enough to have just won $75,000 in a radio artist development program, so the first thing we are working on is recording a new album! We are so excited and have already started working on it, but we are far from being finished. We are hoping/crossing our fingers that we should have something finished by the spring to be released early fall 2016.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not at this moment. But some ideas are rolling around…

Having shared the stage and played some of the biggest festivals in the world – what have you learned from these experiences and how these moments have affected the band both personally and musically?

Experiences like playing festivals and meeting other bands that you look up to is more than words can explain. There is a certain electric buzz in the air during festivals that brings such excitement and connection not just because there is amazing talent and inspiration but also because everyone involved from the bands, to the people that come, to the volunteers and workers of the event, all have a love for music. That community in itself inspires, encourages and uplifts what we as musicians live off of: a plus side to be able to do what you love and to express yourself in your art.

Any plans to hit the road?

We are planning a few radio tours, and some quick and dirty stops around some festivals this year. The big tour will come once our album is finished!

What else is happening next in The Royal Foundry´s world?

We have been working a great deal on some rad, personalized merch, which we will be launching in the new year! Its our first time making a line of items other then CD’s so we are stoked to release some personal and partnered designed lines coming soon!!
