INTERVIEW: Pushing Static

Hi Asher, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been very well! Excited to have the album released and excited to chat with you guys!

Can you tell us more about the story behind your track ¨Even Fireworks¨?

The manifestation of “Even Fireworks” came from my need to compose a high-energy, happy song- and when writing such songs, I often feel the need to have a strong metaphor. Many songwriters use “bright” adjectives to describe love, and I figured: why not take it one step further? Let’s talk about how bright love can be- and fireworks seemed to be a good symbol for brightness.

Did any event in particular inspire the song?

Lyrically, the song is inspired by my wife and her uncanny ability to make me a better person. We’re not perfect people but somehow, by seeking each other with love, any seemingly cumbersome conflict pales in comparison to the relationship we’ve built. This song is my attempt to outwardly express that idea.

The single comes off your new EP Fireworks Dim In The Light Of Love – what´s the story behind the title?

The album title comes strait from the song “Even Fireworks,” and genuinely captures the emotion of my life for the past year. I wanted to harness the energy of what love looks like to submit to being selfless and outward about relationships- and how bright that can be!

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process is always a blast. As a result of being the only person in the band, I’m able to exert complete control over the instrumentation, harmonic content and mix balance in order to present the songs exactly how I want. Specific to this album was a new revision process. I gave myself loads of time to be thoughtful about dynamics and drama between rough cuts of each song. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about engineering- which has led me down a path of possibly opening a public studio in the near future.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

All of the songs off this album were inspired by my wife. That was the banner I marched under. We’re newly married and we have an entire lifetime ahead of us, and encapsulating this moment of our lives was really important to me. I’m excited to have these lyrics released.

Any plans to hit the road?

Great question. After performing the Eastern Seaboard for this album release, I’m going to take a small break – likely begin writing again – and play several venues between Boston and DC in the late spring. I’ll keep you posted with dates as they’re scheduled!

What else is happening next in Pushing Static´s world?

As mentioned above, for the next year I’ll be refocusing on releasing another album (hopefully early 2017) and obsessing over the details of the engineering process. I’d love to help other artists elevate their craft with my skills, and I have a lot of learning ahead of me to make that happen. Oh, and I’ll probably reading more VENTS articles, too!
