Bearcat Self-titled EP

Those familiar with To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) will know of Renee Yohe whose inspirational story of triumph inspired the creation of the non-profit that has helped millions. However, Renee is so much more than an inspirational story of survival but rather an incredible musician who is the vocalist for the band Bearcat. With a suave, upbeat, and exciting sound, Yohe and her band have an incredible EP to offer music listeners. The five tracks on their self-titled EP “Bearcat” are absolutely great.

Saudade begins the EP off on a strong note. There is a retro-classic sound to Yohe’s vocal styling that is very impressive and the way she delivers the lyrics wraps you up in the emotion. It truly makes every word so believable and relatable.

Crazy Fishes is by far one of the most noteworthy and memorable tracks on the EP. There is a great use of piano and a jazz-like sound that is much like music of another time. You can hear the influence of Fiona Apple and the like in her arrangements.

Track 3, The Wood & The Trees has such a beautiful sound and the lyrics are incredibly well-written. “We’re too blinded by impossibility” is just one of the lyrics in this track that will stick with you on the first listen. There is so much beauty behind her voice and inspiration in her lyrics. This track is truly touching.

I Am Me, track 4, incorporates great usage of percussion and acoustics. The sound is very upbeat. The harmony between Yohe’s voice and the instrumentals flows perfectly. There is richness and warmth that is very classic in her sound.

To conclude the track is The Nothing. The sound is so contagious. You won’t be able to help being swept up in the sound and the story of the lyrics. This track is my favorite on the EP. It’s definitely a powerful track with well harmonized instrumentals that offer a new take sixties pop.

As I finished listening to this EP all I could think of is what can this young woman not do? There is so much talent, truth, and passion behind every track. While the production quality is not as up to par as it should be it does not take away from the amazing sound of the EP. Take a moment to listen, support her in this new endeavor. Her voice definitely deserves to be heard… you won’t be disappointed.
