Electro/indie duo Subtle Smiles have just released their debut album, Significant Other via Seattle imprint, Donut Sounds Record Co. The album is an eclectic fusion of drum and bass, electro, 90’s dance, and dream pop, and features the sparkling current single, “Inside Outside.”

Fans can stream “Inside Outside” on Spotify and Soundcloud.

Shifting from the dreamy atmospherics of tracks like “Blue Skies,” to the trippy and ethereal bossa-nova led “Discarded Dreams,” Significant Other is a kaleidoscopic experience that shows producer Brian Frederick and vocalist Marley Rae diving into a spectrum of influences and emerging with something fresh and uniquely theirs.

“We both spent roughly two years putting this together, almost entirely within the vacuum of our own relationship,” says Brian Frederick. “It’s been a whirlwind of emotions, as the support and excitement has been shared with new and old friends around the world. We wrote and re-wrote songs multiple times, mixing and re-mixing some of the tracks as many as 18 times until it felt exactly right, and even mastered the album 4 separate times until it was uncompromisingly what we wanted to express. We’re beyond elated to team up with Donut Sounds and look forward releasing the rest of our vision with JR and Brendan’s help and guidance.”

In addition to the digital release, the duo have teamed up with Seattle based Donut Sounds Record Co on a limited cassette pre-order of Significant Other. Fans can pre-order the cassette here.

Comprised of vocalist Marley Rae and producer Brian Frederick, Subtle Smiles spent 2017 recording the bulk of Significant Other at Hybrid Studios in Santa Ana, CA. The duo also recorded sections of the album in their apartment in Long Beach and even in one of the cabins of the Queen Mary Hotel during a stay in 2018.
