Today sees the very first song release from La Force, the new project from Broken Social Scene’s Ariel Engle. Entitled “You Amaze Me,” the song — written for Engle’s husband and musical cohort Andrew Whiteman (Apostle of Hustle, BSS) — is a sumptuous, nocturnal electro pop confection, and a brilliant introduction to one of Canada’s most exciting new artists via the Arts & Crafts label.
Engle — whose previous project with Whiteman, AroarA, was the best kept secret amongst Broken Social Scene fans — has emerged to the forefront of the collective via the band’s acclaimed 2017 album Hug Of Thunder, lending fluid, commanding lead vocals to the oblique anthem “Stay Happy” and the soaring “Gonna Get Better.” Stepping up to the role first helmed by the immeasurable talents Leslie Feist, Emily Haines (Metric), and Amy Millan (Stars), Engle brings La Force’s singularity to the familial energy of Broken Social Scene, leaving an indelible mark on the collective’s rousing performances.
Borrowing its identity from the tarot card representing Strength, La Force captures the bold creative spirit of an undeniable voice. The project is a deep reflection on the magic and dismantlement of motherhood; the never-ending tightrope walk of life, and death; and the re-discovery of self. Fittingly, “You Amaze Me” defines the tender but powerful essence of the project itself. Shaped with Warren Spicer of Plants & Animals, and featuring members of Suuns, Patrick Watson, and Broken Social Scene, “You Amaze Me” crystallizes the reverrent, spiritual tone of Engle’s musical being.
La Force will be releasing more music throughout 2018 via Arts & Crafts; stay tuned for more…
