INTERVIEW: Mikey See

How would you classify your music?

Pop/RNB with a hint of soul… so if Post Malone and Somo had a baby…that could be me.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

-Demi Lovato-she has gone through literally everything I have, the intense debilitating bullying, drug abuse, and just life’s shit. She has really been open about her battle with all her demons.

-Beyonce because she is the queen, duh. She slays. She’s bae.

-Whitney Houston-her voice. OMG. Come on. She was beautiful ,gorgeous, resilient…like there are literally no words to describe her other than perfect.

-Melanie Martinez-she did it herself, she did it on her own. No label. She’s just a hard worker, she never gave up, and look her now. She won the Voice and is killing it. She’s so mad.

-Billie Eilish- So Billie is so quirky and weird with her street style and her music. She is so young and so talented and you can tell she doesn’t give a fuck about what people think of her, and I think that’s why she’s so hot.

So I was like 14, we used to live with my grandma, aunt, uncle, cousin, and my immediate family and we had this shed in the backyard, and I used to go out there and sing Whitney and Beyonce and practice out there because I didn’t want anyone to hear me, because I was so mad shy and I didn’t think I was good enough and I didn’t want to get discouraged. I was here by Beyonce and The Classic, I will always love you were my go to songs, because I could belt out those songs. It’s like Nate Ruess from FUN. He learned to sing by singing at the top of his lungs in his car! That was my safe haven.

What do you want fans to take from your music?

I want them to feel my love. I want them to feel I’m giving back to them. That they can do anything they want. To pursue your dreams no matter how crazy you think they are. I want people to understand what it was like for me growing up. How shitty and relentless people can be. I want people to experience life with me. The good, bad the and ugly. I don’t ever want to sugar coat everything. Everyone sugars coats things. I tell it how it is, I write it how it is, and I want people to know its ok to express every feeling they are feeling, no matter how ridiculous it is because that’s me. I wear my heart on my sleeve, and that screws me sometimes, but that’s me.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

I mean… it’s Los Angeles, the city of angels, a city of dreams and hope. This is where people come to make it. The music scene is so on point. Whether its sold out shows at the staples center, Monday’s at School Night at Bardot, or these secret shows at places like hotel café, no name room, or peppermint club. There are legendary venues with so much history, how can the scene not be killer.

What is your Creative process?

Most of the time, I sit alone and just write by myself. I am always writing down whatever. Like if something is going on, I write about it and sit with it. Like, I wrote “don’t wait” in a hotel room in jersey. We wanted to go to Cracker Barrel, I was in a bad mood, and I just cranked it out. I felt so much better after I wrote out all this stuff on paper. From there I took it to a studio NY and worked with Donnie Klang at The Loft and he produced the beat and the song. Most of my songs comes from stuff happening in my life right now. The process is different every time honestly. I have started co-writing with some killer writers and its taking my music is ridiculous levels and its awesome to see how different writers can just create a song from nothing.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

So, I will always remember a couple years ago, I went with a group to a Chris Brown show. From what I remember, it was so amazing, we got so blazed, took a limo and danced our asses off. I always do it big. Such an intense night. When you know every song they do, when you go with your group, and you’re getting crazy, you know it’s going be a night you’re going talk about for a long time.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

So my EP isn’t out until September, but I have a song that will be on the EP called “Where I Belong”. Its my favorite song. I work with an amazing writer and musician, Glenn Travis. When we met, we instantly vibed and connected. This song came out, and it literally put into words all my feelings about my decision to move out to LA, leave my past, my family, the negativity, the love, the hatred and my friends. I’m finally home, I’m finally where I belong. I’m perusing my dreams and no one is going to stop me.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

So that’s a crazy question. I don’t even know where to start. I was not in a great place a year ago, I hadn’t even recorded a single song. Nothing. Literally nothing. I didn’t even step into a studio until June. I decided to stop being a puss and I laid down my first track, “don’t wait”. It sucked to put myself out there and to open myself up for judgement and criticism. The song got shared around, and it was, to my surprise, really well received. I met some really shitty people that took advantage of me, and ended up moving out to LA on empty promises they made. But it took me meeting some really shady people, to meet the amazing team I’m working with now, the dream team. I have been moving a million miles a minute prepping for this release. My world has completely changed in the past year, I never thought I’d be here. I’ve learned really quickly, you can tell who your friends are, the people who have your best interests in mind, and the people who want to take advantage of you. I’ve definitely had to adapt to really bad situations, but they have always come out to make me a better person. I am so excited for the rest of this year and I am not looking back.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Well obviously, I want  co-write with queen bee, have dinner, have her babies even though I’m gay, whatever she wants. HA.  I would love to go to dinner with Amy Winehouse. That would be so dope. I am taking her to Cheesecake Factory, omg cheesecake factory…or Nobu, I think that’s the more sophisticated answer. I think I’d ask Shawn Mendes for a drink, because he’s real cute. Lol. That’s it. Ultimate dream would be to perform with Demi Lovato. Love her music, her style, her everything.

What’s next for you?

Well I said this earlier, I’m prepping for my EP release in September. I already released “don’t wait” and I will be releasing the music video for that in the next month or so. I’m going drop one more single as well before the album drops. We have so much stuff going on behind the scenes that I can’t tell you about right now, but just get ready, you’ll be hearing a lot more from me real soon.
