“I’ve been great, really excited that everything is coming together with the new music.”
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Anarchy”?
“It was produced by Stephen Kozmeniuk and its the first song to come from my new EP.”
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
“We really just wanted to get a hard hitting title to put against an alt-pop disco song. Once we had the title we knew we had to write some gritty lyrics to balance out the upbeat disco feel.”
Any plans to release a video for the single?
“The song seems to be getting some momentum so if that keeps up then it would only make sense to create a visual for it. I have some ideas already cooking for it…”
The single comes off your new album Fools Gold – what’s the story behind the title?
“It really has to do with the ups and downs of the music business. So many times you think you’re about to get your big break but then it doesn’t work out. It’s like how the gold miners would find fools gold and think it was real gold but really it wasn’t anything at all. Just have to get back up and keep searching!”
How was the recording and writing process?
“It was fun, writing the darker lyrics on top of that disco feel was really interesting to see how it all balanced out. The guitar riff on the song was from me the day we wrote it. It was supposed to be just a scratch guitar take so we could write lyrics to it but it ended up staying in the final product.”
What was it like to work with Stephen “Koz” Kozmeniuk and Michael Wise and how did that relationship develop?
“They both really took the time to get to know me and figure out exactly who I was as an artist. I think that’s why they are successful, they aren’t just punching in every session and going through the motions … they are willing to try things and fail until we get to the level the music needs to be. ”
What role does Canada play in your music?
“This EP was written and recorded in Toronto so it’s hard to not let the sights and sounds of that city seep into my music. “
What made you want to seek for a new direction?
“When you are pursuing a dream you have to be willing to fail over and over again. I’ve tried some different sounds and angles over the years and now I’m doing a more alt-pop thing which has really opened up a lot of artistic freedom for me.”
What is that new approach you are after?
“This time around I’m really paying attention to my brand. It took me awhile to really understand the importance of this. I see a lot of bands and artists not representing their music in the right way because they don’t realize that half the battle.”
What aspect of today’s social climate did you get to explore on this record?
“I think its pretty evident that whats going on in the world lyrically found its way on the song “Anarchy” whether we were conscious of it or not while writing it.”
Any plans to hit the road?
“I’m hoping to be playing some dates this summer. I have a good group of fans that have been waiting very patiently for me to come back to their town.”
What else is happening next in Kieran Mercer’s world?
“I believe later this year a full-length album should be in the works. I really want to get back in the studio writing and creating new music”
