Bam Bam- We are a straight up rock band. In a day and age where everything is labeled, what makes us unique is that we have crossover appeal and that allows for us to play with just about anybody. Whether its Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal or Alternative, we have a little bit of all of it in our sound. Hence the name Swirl.
DT- We have heard comparisons to “an amalgamation between Slipknot and AC/DC, to an “edgier U2 with pop-punk edge” over the past year and a half when it comes to the music on either the ‘SWIRL’ EP or the new single “The Lift”. The best way to describe Swirl that I have read is “…an interesting and diverse band to check out, as they combine the best of the past 20 years of American Rock/Hardrock”. Aside from that I always tell people to listen for themselves and tell us what you hear in our music. It wouldn`t be fair of me as a writer to steer your opinion by telling you what you are hearing. “We write the songs. You tell us what it means to you.”
Bam Bam- The four members of Swirl are all approaching our music from our individual influences. As you could imagine, when you have four very different people the answers can vary. Four band members each citing their “top 5” would be too much so I will say Kiss, Metallica, David Bowie, Rush, Motley Crue, Ratt, Journey, Bon Jovi, Korn and Billy Idol all have influenced the Swirl sound. Oops. I think I went over my quota.
What do you want fans to take from your music?
Bam Bam- We try to write tunes that deliver a message. Albeit that its personal at the time its written, what we love hearing the most from fans are that our songs get them through the good and bad times in their lives. The songs are left for your interpretation and that`s the point of Swirl writing original music so relatable to everyone. As the Swirl Society has said, “you guys always seem to Lift me up (wink wink).
How’s the music scene in your locale?
DT- The Southern California music scene is thriving and despite claims to the contrary by some established artists rock n roll is most definitely not “dead”. Since the start of 2018 Swirl has played the world famous Whisky A Go Go to packed rooms three times and we are co headlining a show in Temecula, CA in April. There are some really great bands and artists in the competitive “SoCal music scene”. We push each other to create not only great music, but great shows as well. People are open to being entertained visually as well as sonically.
What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?
Bam Bam- I’m sure that the other guys would have different responses, but for me its KISS. The ultimate showmen. You always feel like you have been to an experience not just a concert. I believe you are a musician in the studio, but an entertainer on stage. For me playing live is all about the fans. Meeting new people and turning a room into new “Swirl Society” members. Nothing like having something you have created being recognized and effecting the very souls of people all around you.
Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?
Bam Bam- Hard to pick just one, but for me it`s “The Lift”. The way this song came together was magical and everyone in the band played a vital role in the creation of the song. We all have those songs where when you listen to them, they take you back to a special moment in time and give you goosebumps when you hear it. That is what “The Lift” does for me personally.
How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?
Bam Bam – We continue to learn, grow and never be satisfied with what we have done. The bar always seems to be raised by us individually in the band and as a result of our first ever Go Fund Me campaign (https://www.gofundme.com/launch-new-music-by-swirl-the-band), our fans clearly believe in us and want MORE!!! Without them our latest song “The Lift” would not have come together the way that it did.
If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?
DT- I suspect the answer will surprise your readers, but for me it is Lionel Richie. The man was responsible for 14 #1 songs in a row at the zenith of his career. That is an incredible feat and I would love to pick his brain about his daily routine, thoughts on song writing and just what was going on in his life at that point that allowed him to create songs that connected so consistently with such a huge amount of people. When you look at the band you will notice the African Americans, the Mexican and the Irishman so clearly we have a broad appeal factor in our line-up. That was not by design, but it is something we are well aware of as people from so many different nationalities and cultures are connecting with Swirl music and especially “The Lift”. That song has reached #4 in Australia, is #13 this week in Scotland and will start being aired in Spain (FM radio) starting March 16, 2018. The song is succeeding in North America as well reaching #1 in the Midwest.
What’s next for you?
Bam Bam- Touring, touring and more touring. We need to get to the places where are music is being played. So far there are 11 countries where Swirl has received exposure in the past 15 months! Whether that is because of the radio exposure or the three Swirl songs that are featured in the 2-time award winning movie ‘Ditch Day’ (http://thefilmditch.com/music-artists/) it`s time for us to get to Europe, South America, Australia, return to Asia, North America and anywhere else there is electricity and interest in Swirl!
