Produced by Chris Potter ( the Verve – Urban hymes, Rolling stones etc.) “ Broken Wing ” has an indie feel with an injection of eletronic production, huge strings parts, an 808 drum machine matched with a live kit and Matt’s distinctive soaring vocals. The track features Richard Ashcroft’s entire band.
Lyrically, it is the ‘get back on the horse’ and ‘get up on your feet’ story that we can all relate to: “ I just want you to fly ” and ” You are not your Broken Wing ” blast out as the chorus. It’s saying that it is ok to be hurt as the struggle to continue is far more important.
Matt has played all over the U.K and the U.S with a residency at the infamous Troubadour and recently finished a successful U.S solo tour.
He has featured on the no.1 U.S dance album for Armin Van Burren in 2015 and continues to write for Armada music.
In addition, we get to talk about the new single and more!
Hi Matt, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thankyou! Thanks for having me . I’ve been very well, even in a hail storm in London today.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Broken Wing”?
This song has been stuck in my head for ages.. that rarely happens. Once I’ve written and recorded something , it ususally disappears for me at that point. This track is infectiuos.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Absolutely; Somebody close to me experienced the harshness of the music industry very early on in their career. There was all the hype of a record. It didnt really take off for whatever reason so the label pushed for a more commercial sound and before a second record could happen the artist was dropped. No record no. 2. Same old story really.. The song is about getting back on the horse and not being a victim of your wounds. That’s where the lyric came from; ” You are not your Broken Wing ” and ” I just want you to fly “.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes, there is a video for broken wing that will be released in March this year. It was filmed by the same guy who did the first single video from this album; ‘Love is not a game’. We shot the Broken wing video in the Joshua tree national park in California. It was fanastic to be there and experience that.
How was the recording and writing process?
The process took a wile. I originally went to record with a friend in Brisbane, Australia but ended up using only some of the parts recorded there for the final album.
Writting wise, it also took a while. I learnt alot from the previous album and wanted to write a lot of songs to be able to choose from with varied characters. I also tried to really craft the songs with specific tempos and keys in mind.
What was it like to work with Chris Potter and how did that relationship develop?
I can honestly say that Chris Potter is one of the nicest people on the planet, he is so talented aswell. Firstly he put up with me! and secondly he is just top notch as a producer. I think the production on this album speaks for itself. He also has a fantastic crew.
How much did he influence the song?
Originally this song was a slow piano thing and it just wasnt working.. Chris upped the tempo and gave it life.
How has the 80s influenced your music?
Massively, Im a fan, great songwriting, funky hair, great gear. Roland if your listening…
Does the single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
Yes, definitely. I have one more track to finish off and we are good to go. It will be another single hopefully.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
‘ Love & Deeper cuts ‘ releasing this Summer.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes, also this Summer. I did alot of solo acoustic shows last year and cant wait to play this whole album to people.
