INTERVIEW: The Victory Drive
Hi Jamie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hi! Ahhh I have no MAJOR complaints at the moment. Thanks so much for talking to me!
I understand you are re-vamping the band – how would that affect the band’s sound?
Yes I am, and you’re correct to hint that changes are coming. I would say that the newer songs are going to be, for themost part, more ElectroPop and less rock, with the exception being “Hey, Anxiety!”. I like playing a style where we aren’t boxed in; we have enough electronic AND rock elements to our sound that if we want to release a dance song, it wouldn’t be awkward, and the same applies the other way around.
Have you gotten used to starting from the scratch after the initial success?
Actually, yes. Initially it felt similar to swallowing broken glass and chasing it with cyanide, but as I started to complete the first songs since the re-vamp, I started to get really excited about the new found freedom to really go in any direction I see fit – without constraints.
Can you talk to us more about your song “Hey Anxiety”?
Just hearing the title sends a shot of nervousness through my veins! (I mean that quite literally). Basically, I suffer from horrible, crippling anxiety. Anxiety so bad that I won’t leave the house for days at a time, and at times I have ended up at the hospital. As a songwriter, I try to write about emotions and situations that people can identify with, and hopefully make life a little easier for someone that listens to the music and feels they can relate. It seems that so many people these days suffer from anxiety, so I felt like if I wrote a song about it, not only would people identify with it, but it would even make me feel better! WELP, it made me feel worse LOL. Hopefully people will identify with it!
Did any event inspire you to write this song?
There wasn’t any particular trigger this time, which makes it even scarier because it’s completely unpredictable and can last for WEEKS or until I get Xanax from the doctor!
Any plans to release a video for the track?
Absolutely. We are going to start releasing a music video for each “single”, along with lyric videos for the rest of the songs. As for the concept, we are basically going to show a typical day in my life, where you will witness bad luck over and and over at an alarming rate… and then, something great happens! and then… well I don’t want to give away the ending…I guess I’ll just suggest people watch! lol
How was the recording and writing process?
It was really exciting this time! Up until this point, the re-vamp had been a solo project. I have a studio in my house, so this basically resulted in me locking myself inside alone for weeks at a clip to record a song Solo-Sal. For this song, however, the original bass player who happens to be my closest friend, Rob Clark, came down to the Jersey Shore to join the song. After I recorded the drums, Rob added bass, I went to guitar, then vocals, then mixing! Compared to our more electronic songs, this was honestly fairly easy to produce from a mixing standpoint since the song is so straightforward. Thewriting, however, is never easy lol.
What role does NJ play in your writing?
To be perfectly honest, none lol. However I would like to clarify this by saying that I have nothing against NJ whatsoever, it just isn’t really part of the writing process. It’s a great place where everyone should visit, as we lay claim to living legends Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, and Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
Well, sort of… It signals the release of a newEP! We will be releasing “Before I Self Destruct – Deluxe EP” this spring, with a follow up single to come along with it!
Any plans to hit the road?
We actually justtttt returned from a Midwestern tour with Rookie of the Year to support the new EP, and we are playing tomorrow, Friday January 19th in NJ with Drake Bell, and we will be looking at a summer tour – full band.
What else is happening next in The Victory Drive´ world?
That’s an excellent question! Well, I recently added Lexi Vito on keys, and on the tour I met who is now our drummer, Daniel Babcock, bringing us back to a full band!! so 2018 should be very exciting, bringing the first full band show from us since 2011!
