Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Its Alright”?
Yes, of course.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, it’s about the after math of a break up. When you feel defeated but aren’t completely able to let go of a situation or person.
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording process was great! My very talented friend Josh Grondin produced it and we definitely were very in sync about what direction we wanted to go in for this song. The writing process was fast, I wrote most of it while walking actually and then ran home to finish it.
How has Angel Olsen influenced your writing?
I’m such a huge Angel Olsen fan. There’s a haunting quality about her voice and writing. When I was first starting off singing I remember feeling pressured to have a higher and airy quality to my voice. Angel Olsen was the first artist I got into that had this low, broad vocal quality that made me feel more comfortable to sing in my natural deeper tone of voice.
What role does Nevada play in your writing?
Growing up I never really connected to where I was from or felt much comfort from it. In the last couple of years before I moved to LA I started taking walks out in the desert, away from the city and then I started feeling much more drawn to it. It’s so vast and there’s this wonderful sense of solitude that I really love.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along? Yes, I will be putting out my EP next year and I’m very excited about it.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
No exact date yet but definitely early next year. As for the title, I’m still deciding between two names for it.
Would you keep diving into shoegaze territory on this new material?
Yes, definitely and also more of an Americana feel as well.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes, I’m going to do a few shows at the end of Nov in Las Vegas and San Fran. Then planning a tour for early next year.
What else is happening next in Sam Valdez’s world?
Just working on a full album and playing as many shows as I can! I’m really hoping to get out to the U.K. soon to play as well.
