Very well thank you! Cheers for having me in for this nterview!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Family Tree”?
Of course, so Family Tree is my first single in about a YEAR, which is a crazy long time for me. I’ve been working on this track for ages and as soon as I wrote it back in Summer 2016 I knew it was going to be the lead track for the next EP. It comes out April 28th and you can find it on all the usual places and of course at www.alexhulmemusic.com
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, I tend to write all my songs from personal experiences and and this track focuses heavily on loss. We had a tragic death in our family tree (hence the song title) my little nephew Nathan who was 4 at the time died in a house fire. The song is very much about coming to terms with fragility of life and how little we can really influence the world around us.
How was the film experience?
AMAZING, Daryl and Byron (PaceProductionsUK) did an unreal job on the video. They are both Ex-Army so they had me out of bed at crazy times to start shooting and we spent the whole two days drinking from streams and scrumping food from the Scottish highlands. Highlight has to be when the pod of dolphins that you see at the beginning showed up! Made getting up at 4am and swimming in the sea worth it!
How was the recording and writing process?
Both took a while. The bulk of the track was done in no time and then I sat on it for a while and refined it for about 3 months! The recording process was similar, it took us two attempts before we got the right vibe we were looking for. Danny at Whitewood Studios in Liverpool did an awesome job, down to him really!
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Sure does, I’ve got a new EP coming out at the end of May and two more singles to go along with that, all really exciting. I’ve already got the next chunk of tracks ready to go for after that so we’ll see how many I can get out this year!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The EP will be called ‘The Leaves EP’ and it should (all things going well) be out the last Friday of May.
Would you be exploring different aspect of tragedies?
The EP is heavily centred around Nathan really, understandably thats been the things thats had the biggest effect on me over the last few years, however the new material after this next EP is headed into more uplifting territories, I recently got married so it’s been wonderful to have some super positive emotions flying around!
Any plans to hit the road?
Always, I’ll be doing the festival circuit over the summer and you’ll be able to come find me at most major cities across the summer. I love touring so can’t wait to get out there again!
What else is happening next in Alex Hulme’s world?
Well I’ve just got married as I said earlier (back in October) and I’ve bought my first house too which is all really exciting! Spent the last month decorating and building my new studio room in the house and I’ve been loving getting my hands dirty! I’m always writing songs and making noise and tend to be partial to hunting down the best Gins around at the moment, can’t beat a good G&T after a show! Thanks a tonne for having down for chat
