CD REVIEW: Native by Kim Vogels

Native is a 5-track EP from Amsterdam artist Kim Vogels. Deep, haunting vocals leave a lasting impression in these tracks. Vogels has a beautiful, rich voice that is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. It comes as no surprise to me after hearing her music that she grew up in a musical environment, becoming a cellist at age 5 and continuing on to performance arts studies while in college. Her lyrics are beautiful, memorable and enjoyable. There is presence of so many musical inspirations in her sound. Folk, jazz, and blues are just a few of the genres she overlaps in her songs. Some of which reminded me of styles like Adele, Patsy Cline and Norah Jones. Vogels is able to capture the essence of so many artists and styles that precedes her but still be completely unique. There is a lot of talent behind her and her operatic vocal range is hypnotizing.

My favorite tracks of the 5 on the EP include Till The End Of Time and Call Of The Wild. They were so beautiful and enjoyable. I found them the best showcase of her talent and the most memorable. However, all 5 tracks were unique and showcase different aspects of Vogels’ range and lyrical storytelling ability. I enjoyed how each song incorporated various instruments, harmonies and vocal range.

I found this EP to be a great sign of things to expect from Kim Vogels as an artist. She is incredibly talented and I expect to hear much more from her going forward—especially if she produces more music to this caliber.

Vogels just recently released a new track entitled Call Of The Wild which is receiving great reviews. To learn more about her, listen or purchase her album Native, and find out upcoming shows you can find her on iTunes, Soundcloud and Facebook.
