Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Futures”?
It’s written as a goodbye to the son of my ex-girlfriend. I was very close with him and the break-up was chaotic, so I wanted to tell him that I will always care. We were very close and I spent 4 years with him.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
How was the film experience?
Last Christmas I asked for all the old vhs tapes from my childhood to be converted to digital media. I myself spent a lot of time looking through it all. Then we went sledding one day with the band to pair with the old family tapes.
The song is sort of sad so I wanted the video to have a slightly uplifting theme while portraying an attempt to not loose your childhood.
I really like The Eels, and I’ve always been impressed by the way Mark Everett is able to give sad songs that feeling that “it might suck, but it’s all going to be ok”. I like that.
Loosing the close relationship to that kid made me once more aware that nothing lasts forever… I guess I miss the innocence of childhood.
How was the recording and writing process?
Normally I write the songs and then we finish them in the rehearsal room but this song came to be on our last European tour. I brought it in right before the tour and we got to rehearse it only a few times.. Then it kinda formed over the course of those 2-5 weeks while we were on tour. The day after we got back we went into the studio and recorded a bunch of tracks. All the tracks were done live and then vocals after and a few guitar-dubs.
What role does Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement plays in your music?
Actually neither of us really listened to Pavement that much. I myself love Dinosaur Jr, but I think more of our inspiration comes from bands like Eels, Nirvana & The Kinks.. We like a lot of stuff actually.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along? There will definitely be an album. A lot of people have been asking that. Last single we toured 150 shows, this time there will be more music sooner – that’s a promise!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Nope, we embrace unpredictability… Maybe anywhere from tomorrow to August 2017??
Any plans to hit the road?
We just got home from a 3-5 weeks European tour for the single. We have a few festivals in summer, but are taking some time off before we tour Europe again in October/November. We will be in the UK for the first time also on the next tour.
What else is happening next in Captain Casanova’s world?
There’s a lot of wonderful and weird ideas, I’m not sure which will be carried out first. But we recently did a live singles session at Tapetown Studio in Denmark which will probably see the light of day post-summer.
It’s us in a room with way too much smoke and strange accessories playing a song called ‘Set Us Straight’.
We haven’t seen the edits of the video yet so we can’t say if it will be terrible or wonderful!
