Hi Alexx, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I am well and thankful for the gift of life.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Angel”?
The idea behind ‘Angel’ was to produce a Downtempo EDM track with Gregorian Chant and Jamaican Dancehall elements. It’s been over 25 years since Enigma took “Sadeness” to #1 around the world. They used a sample. We recorded a fresh approach to it.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Not an event, but my incessant desire of creating music that combines ethnic, religious and electronic elements.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
The video, directed by Englishman Rick Elgood, whose credits include the movies ‘Dancehall Queen and ‘One Love, will be released June 17. It was filmed in Manhattan, New York and Port Antonio, Jamaica.
How was the recording and writing process?
Both guest artists were a pleasure to work with. I recorded Steven’s vocals at my studio in Manhattan and Tommy’s vocals at UIM Studio in Kingston, Jamaica. It was mixed by Dale Virgo at Gee Jam Studios in Jamaica, and mastered by Joe LaPorta at Sterling Sound in New York. Remixes were done by Dirty Disco, out of Texas, Raphael Valentino (of KTU, New York fame), Diztroy out of Jamaica and myself.
Known for collaborating with other artists – do you tend to take a different approach when you work for someone else than when you are writing for your own material?
Of course, when collaborating, one must take into consideration and respect the artist’s style and vision.
Would the album follow the footsteps of your previous materials or is this a total departure?
Without a doubt there will be similarities to the styles I presented in my previous albums. If a few words/terms could describe the new album, they would be: EDM, Electronic, Chill Out, Reggae/Dancehall. Most of the guest singers/rappers will be from Jamaica, including some big names that I’m not at liberty to discuss yet.
How’s your new album coming along?
I’ve completed 18 songs, to choose 12 for the album. All that’s left is to record the guest artist vocals and then do the final mixes. Not as simple as it sounds, though. We are dealing with well-known artists, many of them in the middle of tours.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
End of this year. No title yet.
Any plans to hit the road?
If I do, it would be limited for this year. Maybe after the album is out.
What else is happening next in Alexx Antaeus’ world?
Trying to balance studio sessions and running my restaurant and lounge in Kingston, Jamaica is no easy task. However, I’m also working with two young Jamaican artists.
