Who’s Shugga Shane? Shugga Shane is one of the hardest working emerging rappers in the game right now & the EPITOME of an INDEPENDENT artist. With no help from a manager, agent, or record label I’ve managed to take my career into own hands and yield successful results. I am also a fl, young, swagged out, dope spitter… who’s trying to live life to the fullest and leave a legacy behind for future generations.
How did you get started in the music scene?
It all started rapping in high school but it was more of a hobby to him back then. My friends & I would kick freestyles to each other and write songs on our free time. It wasn’t till after I graduated High School that I started recording and getting more serious about my rap career, once I had a better understanding of it all, I started planning out my success and have been working hard towards it everyday.
What’s the story behind your stage name?
Growing up, I was always smooth with the ladies… I knew how to talk to them, they always said I was sweet.
What are your music influences?
My musical influences… now thats a long list, so I am going to give y’all the main ones. Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Currensy, T.I., Drake, Kid Cudi & Game
How was it to open for acts as Kid Cudi and Game?
It was an amazing yet humbling experience. Both of those guys are world renowned musicians so you know venue was packed to capacity. As a matter of fact, both of those shows, though separate, were held at the world famous Key Club in Hollywood which made the concerts even better. I really enjoyed being able to showcase my talents in front of a large audience and really having fun with it. I definitely felt like I rocked the crowd right and gained some new fans those 2 concerts. It was really dope watching Cud & Game perform, respectively. I would say I soaked up some game watching those 2 on stage. They both have had an influence on my musical style so I was taking mental notes while spectating during their performances. I can’t wait till I am in their position and headline shows as opposed to opening them.
So tell us more about your latest music video.
It’s for my fan favorite single, “Smoke Somethin” which is off my previously released mixtape, “Ears To The Streets”…both can be found on my website (www.ShuggaShane.com). Also this was my first time actually directing a video so I had a lot of control over it and got to do it the way I visioned it. It was filmed at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. The video has guest appearances from Crown Fam, lots of weed smokin & partying, as well as interesting perspectives. I would definitely say its worth watching, plus the song is dope!
L. A. King$. How was the recording and writing process? How you came out with the album’s title? Any release date in mind?
I am almost done recording it…still have about 2-3 more tracks to lay down and its a wrap! The writing and recording happened at different times…not all in one sitting or session. Various life situations inspired my to make certain tracks, so I would write a couple songs, record them…mix them, then move on to the next one. The title came from a theme I wanted to follow for this album. At this time, the Los Angeles Kings had just won the Stanley Cup, so that instantly caught my attention because it brought yet another championship to the city. I felt that I am a young champion of rap with the tracks I have compiled on this album so I wanted to give it a title that was synonymous with winning. Further more, I am a Crown Fam Records artist so I often refer to my self as “King” on many of my songs. Lastly I wanted to pay homage to the great city of Los Angeles, I wanted to only feature other dope emerging rappers from the L.A. area, and I wanted the title to embody a “West Coast” consciousness.
What’s your method at the time of writing a song?
I don’t really have a method because I don’t really write down any lyrics unless I feel that it will be a while before I record. I usually will play the beat over and over while smoking some doobies & get a feel for the track. Then I might pace around the studio, smokin & constructing raps in my head or sitting and freestyling until I find a flow that fits and start elaborating on it in my head. Basically I devise the whole verse/song in my mind and then go into the booth to record after. I have a very good memory when it comes to song lyrics. Often times, I will make up a verse while driving or compose a song in my mind while doing other tasks. And usually I will just keep repeating the words to the song until I have memorized them well enough to lay them down or I’ll jot em down in my iPhone if I don’t get the opportunity to record them fairly soon. I like to rap from memory as opposed to reading something when recording, I think it gives my songs a more fluid & natural flow/rhythm.
What has been one of the funniest moments you have been or took part while touring?
At one of the gigs, the production manager said that we couldn’t “grab our crotch” while rapping because there would be kids in the audience! Hahaha…she actually said “No crotch grabbing on stage gentlemen!”…aww man, just hearing her say that made me bust out laughing, especially since I never really grab my crotch while performing.
Are there any plans for the future we should be aware of?
Yes, I have some grand ideas for 2013 so stay in tune with my social media and keep up! Add me on FB or Follow @ShuggaShane1 on twitter. I plan to drop “L.A. King$” this spring…so look out for that, it will be a DOPE release, I guarantee it. I am actually going to put out a brand new music video this month, on 1/23, dropping the visuals to “King of the Jungle” which was a song off my last mixtape. That will be a trill video, it was derived in a more avant-garde style so it is interesting to say the least. I plan to keep releasing a new music video each month of the year so make sure your checkin ’em! Also, I am focusing on doing bigger shows and play some prominent music festivals this year, right now I am campaigning to get on Paid Dues 2013, SXSW, Indie Music Festival & Florida Music Festival. I think thats about it for now, I can’t give away all my plans yet. Oh yea, I am rockin a show with Nipsey Hussle in downtown L.A. Feb. 8th, thats goin to be ill.
Where can we find more about your music?
You can find my music all over the world wide web. The best place is my Official Website; www.ShuggaShane.com … everything is on there, my music, vids, bios, blog posts, social meda, etc…. but your more then welcome to google or youtube me and follow the trail.
Do you feel like you’re moving on the right direction?
Yes, I feel that I am moving in the right direction… might not be at the speed I would like, but I am seeing progress every time I evaluate my career. When your an emerging artist, it’s really about forward movement…progression. People rarely blow over night, it usually takes a lot of grinding to break through. I have been working very hard the last year plus…and I have seen my numbers go up, I have been gathered a larger following, I have seen more blogs/websites/magazines mention me or feature my work & I have been presented with more music related opportunities, so I definitely feel that I am on the right track.
